The School Leavers Program
This program commenced at Wangarang Industries in February 1999. The program is designed for young people with a disability, aged 15 - 24, who wish to work but are not work ready. It provides intensive training and support to assist the young school leavers with disabilities to make the transition from school to employment. Individual goals and training needs are identified and on-the-job training and support are provided to enable these trainees to reach standards of work readiness. The programs are designed to meet the needs of the trainee and to offer the flexibility to be integrated into a total educational or vocational program.
Areas of employment include
- textiles
- manufacturinghorticulture
- timber operations
Applicants should
- be a young school leaver with a disability who is in their final years of school or who has recently left school
- have Centerlink endorsement
- be able to participate in the program while still attending school if required
- be able to care for their own personal toileting and hygiene needs
- be able to behave in a way that does not endanger themselves or others, or cause disruption to the flow of work
- be able to understand and respond to simple instructions
- have the minimum social skills necessary to interact with other workers
- be able to concentrate and stay on task for training sessions
Entry to the Program
Priority for entry to the program is determined on the basis of relative need of the applicant according to the above criteria.
